About MPV Surveys

Possibly the best known activity that MPV Consulting currentlys offers are the MPV benchmarking surveys that are regularly carried out throughout Australia. Over 1100 veterinary practices (about 55%) have seen the value of participating in at least one of these surveys since 2005. Each survey has been specifically designed so that you will understand the position that your practice occupies for each survey.

The role of analysis

Before you start to get involved with marketing and business performance it is important to understand exactly what marketing represents. Our experience has been that most veterinarians confuse ‘marketing’ and ‘promotions’.

The marketing concept holds that “to deliver a company’s goals depends on determining the needs wants and demands of clients and then delivering the desired satisfaction for clients more effectively than competitors”.

Promotion is simply one of several tools used to assist in achieving this outcome. What this means is that ‘marketing’ is in fact the whole package deal from start to finish for delivering veterinary services to our clients. This will include dealing with, and planning for, items such as – the services we offer; the prices we charge; the processes we create to deliver; our staff and people; our promotional activities etc. In order to deal with these effectively you as a practice owner or manager must set up a suitable process for planning for this to happen.

Once this planning is done you then need to monitor the performance and to confirm that this performance is comparable to industry standards.

Order of events in developing marketing strategies

Where do veterinary practices go wrong?

Most veterinary practices go wrong right at the beginning – at the analysis stage! Keen veterinarians replace this analysis with enthusiasm and develop marketing activities based on opinion or intuition rather than true business principles.

It has long been recognised that intuition and enthusiasm are an important part of business but successful businesses usually engage intuition only after a full analysis and evaluation of a position is complete.

Where do MPV Surveys fit in?

Many years ago Rob White, the director of MPV Consulting, recognised that most veterinarians working within the industry were operating practices that were effectively isolated from each other in a business sense. There were few accurate industry benchmarks available on which to compare both the operation and performance of a veterinary clinic and practices were generally reluctant to share confidential information of a business nature. This meant of course that the order of events in developing business strategy (see above diagram) was severely limited at both the initial “Analysis of the business” and also when it became time for “Evaluation of success”. After all, how can you determine your practices performance when you don’t know what represents success for the rest of the industry.

As a result of this, in 2005 MPV Consulting spent a considerable amount of time and investment developing a range of MPV Surveys specifically so that veterinarians could compare their performances in various aspects of veterinary business in a confidential manner.

What about survey confidentiality?

MPV Consulting recognises that both the integrity of MPV Consulting and the ongoing participation of veterinary practices are totally dependant on the maintenance of strict rules about data confidentiality.

All surveys performed by MPV Consulting come with an assurance of confidentiality for individual clinic data. Individual clinic data will only be viewed by MPV Consulting staff or persons directly associated in the actual physical act of data collation for survey results. No information of any individual clinic will be supplied to any source other than the specified contact for each clinic. Should any survey involve sponsors or supporters, this will not, and will never, include any form of access to any individual clinic information without written permission of that clinic.

Your role in industry sub-cultures

Whilst the veterinary industry is almost considered to be a ‘big family’, the reality is that there are a variety of different ‘sub-cultures’ within the industry. This of course means that benchmarking of specific business items would only be effective if a veterinary practice can compare themselves to other practices that are within the same or similar sub-cultures. To resolve this problem MPV Consulting developed the concept of ‘profile groups’ which effectively allows survey participants to choose the groups of practices with which they can identify and subsequently benchmark themselves. Today all surveys performed by MPV Consulting automatically allow practices to specifically select their sub-cultural grouping based on: State, Location of practice, Size of practice, Type of practice and Practice management software used. Occasionally profile groups are added for some specific surveys if they are required.

Where are you positioned within the industry?

The percentile rating was first used in the successful Annual MPV Fees Survey of 2005. Your percentile will determine your exact position when compared with all participating practices.

Percentile rating is best described by the following example: if you participated in an exam and when the results were distributed the lowest student scores 40% and the highest 75% with an average score of 55%. The student that scored 40% is the lowest percentile compared to all students that participated and thus has a percentile rating of 0%, the student that scored 75% is the top student and thus has a 100% percentile. If you scored 62% as a grade but only 15% of students scored higher than yourself and 84% scored less than you then you will have an 84% percentile rating even though your score of 62% was only 7% above the average.

No participation, no results

At MPV Consulting we regularly have requests for results of surveys by practices that have not contributed to the collation of data. We consider this situation to be unfair on those that have made the effort to participate fully. As a result MPV Consulting has a strict rule that is applied rigidly to all our surveys. This rule is: full results are only available to those practices that take the time and effort to participate with genuine and complete practice information. Some survey information pertaining to general trends or specific examples may be published after a suitable time period that gives participating practices opportunity to benefit from their participation.

Employee Hourly Rate Survey 2020
 A truly worthwhile survey!
Completed but still ready for more!

The MPV Employee Hourly Rate Survey is our second most popular survey. Our goal is to help YOU to understand what is fair and reasonable pay for your staff!
The reality is that the veterinary industry is reasonably small and there is significant communication between members of the profession. Your staff are probably more likely to talk about their pay situations to their colleagues than to you.The biggest advantage is that this survey allows you as an employer to know what the market is paying before you enter into negotiations with staff regarding their wages.
"It would help my staff appraisals knowing what other practices pay their staff!" Could be you!
